Pratt Joins NYC’S College Challenge

The Community Engagement Board (C-Board) is coordinating Pratt’s
efforts in NYC’s College Challenge. The initiative seeks to mobilize
students, faculty, and staff to participate in both structured and
self-directed volunteerism.

Parts of these efforts include keeping track of the amount of service hours
that students, faculty, and staff members complete this semester.

Members of the Pratt community can go to
http://www.nycservice.org/college_challenge.php to log in any service hours
completed hours since January 1, 2010. Please visit the website and go to
the “College Challenge” section to submit hours.

Rules:

-  General Service Projects (1 hour of service by 1 person = 1 point)
o Students volunteering at any service project throughout the five
boroughs via a 5013 nonprofit or city agency
o Students may include time spent volunteering through service
projects
coordinated by campus service offices or on-campus clubs

-  NYC Service Impact Service Projects (1 hour of service by 1 person = 2
points)
o Students who choose to volunteer with any of the Impact Service
Projects
(ISPs) outlined in the NYC Service Report (ISP list available on
        http://www.nyc.com/service)

-  Examples of activities that count for points:
o   Activities such as walking a dog for an animal shelter, tutoring
an
elementary school student, spending time with a senior citizen,
planting a tree through MillionTreesNYC, mentoring a middle
school
        student, etc.

-  Examples of activities that do NOT count for points:
    o Tutoring a student’s young sibling, carrying a neighbor’s
groceries,
picking up litter on your block. While these are great things to
do, it
is difficult to verify these activities since they are of an
independent
      nature.

-  Even if you volunteer in a group, each individual who participated in
the
project must have their hours logged-in their hours separately (Student
Activities can help register individual students and large groups -
please
  contact us for more details).
